Xindian Store: Circular IKEA and Secondhand Bazaar

Xindian Store: Circular IKEA Restoring the Beauty of Used Goods

IKEA is known for its proactiveness in launching and promoting eco-friendly initiatives to make the world a better place. We joined forces with social enterprise Story Wear by combining fashion with circular product design principles to organize the "Circular IKEA" exhibition at IKEA Xindian Store. Aside from exploring the meaning of zero-waste fashion, it also allowed us to discover the hidden beauty of used goods and breathe new life into them by transforming them into unique art pieces.

Through this exhibition, we instilled the values of environmentalism in the people and showed how ordinary, everyday items could be restored and transformed into beautiful, decorative accessories with just a touch of creativity. As such, we hope everyone will adopt sustainable habits to protect the environment.

Secondhand Bazaar A Blueprint for a Sustainable Lifestyle

IKEA kicked off the exhibition at Xindian Store with a secondhand bazaar to encourage the recycling and reuse of old furniture. Nearby residents and netizens were invited to participate in this bazaar by setting up stalls to sell their used items. The secondhand bazaar functioned as a hub to facilitate the buying, selling, and exchanging of used goods. By offering everyone the chance to unearth hidden gems, the bazaar prolonged the lives of secondhand furniture and celebrated the cycle of kindness. Most importantly, furniture in good condition did not have to be thrown away!

「Restoring the Beauty of Used Goods」Highlights

Story Wear brought together the concept of sustainability and recycling to create the key visuals of Circular IKEA. The exhibition featured a Zero-Waste Construction gallery, an Old Furniture Transformation zone, and a secondhand charity bazaar. It aimed to add value and artistic flair to used goods.

Constructing the Gallery With Old Wood Pieces

Old and discarded wood pieces from IKEA’s showrooms were used to construct the Zero-Waste Construction gallery. Doing so prevented the creation of additional waste in this one-time event.

Transforming Old Furniture and Piggy Banks for Charity

IKEA collaborated with public figures and artists to revamp its old furniture and products, showing how one could care for the environment by repurposing old items. Singer Bii, Want Show Laundry, and designer Jerry Hsieh were involved in transforming IKEA’s flawed tables, chairs, and other old furniture into lovely and unique pieces. Moreover, Bii redesigned a set of piggy banks previously used as display items in IKEA's showrooms. Later, these one-of-a-kind pieces were auctioned off for charity.

Prolonging Clothing Lifespans With a Charity Bazaar

The fashion and textile industry is the world’s second-largest source of pollution. As a way of promoting sustainability and maximizing resources, IKEA organized a secondhand charity bazaar with Want Show Laundry to remind the public to appreciate their garments and prolong their lifespan.

Upcycling IKEA’s Old Uniforms

Usually, it is very challenging to reuse discarded uniforms as they often bear the logos of various enterprises. As such, this causes them to be doomed to a fate in the landfill. Yet, Story Wear managed to upcycle IKEA’s old uniforms manually by cleaning the fabric, making prototypes and patterns, disassembling the fabric, and sewing and joining various pieces together. The uniforms’ collars were also retained; thus, limited-edition Mini Pet Uniforms and Shark Uniforms were born.

Most importantly, upcycling old uniforms contributes to waste reduction and provides employment opportunities to the needy. Story Wear’s garment production team is made up of mothers of children with cerebral palsy. A zero-waste enterprise, Story Wear supports women in reentering the job market. The ladies get to put their skills to good use by solving textile waste issues and promoting zero-waste values by upcycling old clothes. The upcycling of IKEA’s old uniforms has also inspired us to appreciate and value our clothes.

Charity Through Waste Reduction

After cost deductions, all proceeds collected at Circular IKEA were donated to The Society of Wilderness to support zero-waste initiatives and protect the ecosystem. Join us in caring for the people and Earth by creating sustainable and zero-waste memories together!
