Healthy and Sustainable Living
Water-saving Facilities
With deep roots in Kaohsiung for many years, we continuously adopt new equipment and make efforts each year to save water. As a result, we have been honored with the Excellent Award for the implementation of water-saving guidance and improvements by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
✔️ Bathroom renovation: All new fixtures are upgraded to water-saving certified models.
✔️ Replacing water-saving toilets/faucets: Saves up to 50% of water consumption.
✔️ Office renovation with waterless urinals: Saves 1.2 million bottles of 600cc water each year.
✔️ Replacing restaurant dishwashers: Reduced water consumption from 833 liters per hour to 280 liters.
Farewell to Food Waste
The sugar/creamer powder dispensers replace single-use sugar and creamer packets, allowing customers to take only what they need, reducing over 200,000 single-use packets annually. The 3F Swedish Restaurant also sells IKEA 365+ food containers, which has helped decrease food waste by approximately 200 kg since its implementation, ensuring zero food waste. Coffee grounds are given a second life, regularly processed into fertilizer and spread in surrounding flower beds, promoting circular reuse.
Circular Economy and Becoming Climate Positive
Energy-saving Hardware
We are committed to replacing outdated equipment every year, and in 2023, we upgraded to a variable frequency magnetic levitation chilled water system, which can save 180,000 kWh of electricity annually. In total, all the equipment combined saves approximately 1.46 million kWh, which can supply electricity to about 346 households.
✔️ Replacement of restaurant dishwashers: Reduced electricity consumption from 90 kWh to 57.7 kWh.
✔️ Replacement of energy-consuming air conditioning/Installation of 2,000 solar panels: Estimated annual electricity generation of 900,000 kWh, which can supply electricity to approximately 220 households.
✔️ Replacement of cooling towers: Annual electricity savings of approximately 90,000 kWh, which can supply electricity to about 22 households.
People-Oriented Approach
For several consecutive years, IKEA Kaohsiung has partnered with a local rural women’s sewing organization, Tzu Chi Sewing, to repurpose discontinued sofa covers that can no longer be sold on-site. These covers are transformed into pencil cases, zipper pouches, drink bags, tote bags, pillowcases, and more, giving the materials a second life while supporting economic independence for women in rural areas. In 2023, customers were invited to sponsor charity food packages, which were distributed through the North and South Kaohsiung branches of the Family Support Foundation to over 1,000 families in need, ensuring that children who face food insecurity no longer have to confront hunger alone.
Promoting Technical Education in Rural Areas
In collaboration with the TSMC Charity Foundation, which has long been committed to rural education, we jointly promote corporate technical and vocational training programs. In the initial trial phase, with the support of our logistics partner, PSC Group, students from the National Jia-Dong Senior Agricultural Vocational School are invited to enter and receive training and internships, assisting them in acquiring professional skills and providing opportunities for impoverished students to escape poverty.
